A resin printer curing a detailed part with UV light
TECHNOLOGY / SLA · DLP · LCD

What is SLA 3D printing and which resin process should you choose?

Compare SLA, DLP and LCD/MSLA for sculpture, jewellery, prototypes, dental and high-detail parts.

VAT PHOTOPOLYMERIZATION

Liquid resin is cured layer by layer with light

SLA is an early additive-manufacturing process that cures photopolymer layer by layer. Fine detail, smooth surfaces and complex geometry make it useful for high-resolution resin printing, jewellery, sculpture and presentation prototypes.

The everyday term resin 3D printer covers laser SLA, projector DLP and LCD/MSLA. They differ in speed, pixel geometry, exposure behaviour and maintenance.

RESIN SELECTION

Select resin by function—not colour

FAST 3D PRINT

Standard / ABS-like

Display and general prototypes; distinguish rigid, brittle and tough grades.

FAST 3D PRINT

Engineering

Tough, flexible, high-temperature or ESD grades require data-sheet and post-cure control.

FAST 3D PRINT

Castable

Designed for low-residue burnout in jewellery and precision casting.

FAST 3D PRINT

Dental / Medical

Must be used within the manufacturer's validated indication and workflow.

Important

Uncured resin and cleaning fluids require PPE, ventilation and proper disposal; low odour does not prove safety.

CHOOSING A SERVICE

What to send for an SLA printing quotation

  • STL/OBJ/STEP with units and actual dimensions.
  • Mark the smallest detail and visible surfaces.
  • State quantity, colour, transparency and required properties.
  • State whether it will be painted, assembled, cast or exposed to heat.
  • Agree support marks, finishing and tolerance.
  • Request sample approval before a larger batch.
